      The first garden book mass-printed in English was titled A Most Briefe and Pleasant Treatyse, Teachings Howe to Dress, Sowe, and Set a Garden (), and was produced in England by Thomas Hyll. It was a small, simple book directed toward the average gardener at a time when reading and books were largely reserved for the elite.   I don't know if Winter Garden is actually about a garden--it's a novel and after reading the prologue and blurb on the jacket sleeve I don't see any mention of gardens. The second one is a gardening memoir of a woman's first garden in Santa Cruz California and then she moves up to Redwood country, Eureka, California.
